Architecture studio TAEP/AAP has unveiled White Fortress, a private beachfront retreat in southern Kuwait. Located in Al Khiran Pearl City, the home features a striking lighthouse-style tower rising above its fortified walls. Designed for relaxation, it combines traditional Kuwaiti architecture with modern design elements.

A Modern Take on Traditional Courtyard Homes

White Fortress takes inspiration from classic Kuwaiti courtyard homes. Thick concrete and brick walls protect it from the region’s harsh climate while enclosing a series of low-rise buildings. The design follows a linear layout leading toward the sea, with oval patios, courtyards, and a lush central “oasis” filled with tall palm trees.

According to TAEP/AAP partner Rui Vargas, the project revives the concept of courtyard homes, which once dominated Kuwaiti architecture. The central courtyard allows natural ventilation and light while maintaining privacy. This feature reconnects the home with its surroundings in a way that modern construction often overlooks.

Functional Spaces and a Towering “Lighthouse”

The home is divided into different zones. At the center, a large courtyard links social areas, including the dining room, library, and a “diwania” — a traditional gathering space for discussions and meetings. The eastern section, closest to the sea, offers privacy with three bedrooms and direct beach access.

One of the most distinctive elements of White Fortress is its cylindrical tower, described as a “lighthouse.” This structure, punctuated with oval windows, houses an office on the first floor. A terrace at the top provides panoramic views of the Gulf and surrounding desert. The second floor features a prayer space oriented toward the qibla, adding a spiritual aspect to the design.

Climate-Responsive Architecture and Handcrafted Interiors

To keep the home cool, the design integrates overhangs, shaded areas, and greenery. The structure relies on accessible and cost-effective materials, with exposed concrete enhancing its minimalist aesthetic. Inside, handcrafted ceramic and terracotta tiles, along with traditional terrazzo flooring, celebrate local craftsmanship.

Extending toward the private beach, the home includes a partially covered terrace with views of the Gulf. This seamless blend of indoor and outdoor spaces enhances the relaxing atmosphere.

Located an hour south of Kuwait City, Al Khiran Pearl City is an ambitious development originally planned by Buro Happold in 1987. White Fortress reinterprets traditional architecture for modern living, setting a new standard for luxury beachfront homes in the region.
