A new immersive exhibition in Abu Dhabi analyzes life in the UAE during the 1990s, bringing back memories for art lovers. The exhibition – Zemanna – at Manarat Al Saadiyat, created by UAE artists and organized by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT – Abu Dhabi), will run through June 13, 2022.

The exhibition, which includes commissioned artworks and installations by ten Emirati and UAE-based artists as well as a variety of organized public programmes, is a critical visual investigation of the UAE in the 1990s.

The artists reflect and respond to a time of change, flux, and unparalleled growth in the UAE through their works. Technology’s impact, globalization, and migration are all discussed in depth in the tale. Finally, the exhibition provides for a moment of contemplation on the social, cultural, and urban fabric’s consequences, changes, and influence during the 1990s.

“Zemanna is an intriguing and unusual exhibition, combining the force of art with immersive and interactive experiences to reflect on and reminisce about a foundational decade,” said Fatima Al Yousef, acting department head at Manarat Al Saadiyat. This show, which includes works by established UAE artists as well as a variety of imaginative cultural activations, aims to encourage local creatives while also exploring our history with pride and introspection.

The multi-room experience critically looks into themes and expressions of popular culture such as music, urban architecture, movies, cars, and more, while triggering nostalgic recollections in a trip through the UAE’s collective memory. It also looks at the influence they have had 30 years later on society and the community.

Participating artists include Afra Al Dhaheri, Aisha Al Ahmadi, Rawdha Al Ketbi, Mays AlBaik, Alaa Edris, Sree, Ghada Al Sayegh, Maytha Al Shamsi, Jumairy, and Fadel Al Mheiri, who have created bright multimedia artworks and interactive installations for the exhibition.
