Lali Torma, a dynamic artist whose journey has traversed continents and artistic movements, embodies a fusion of influences and a commitment to free expression. Beginning as a part-time, self-taught artist in Canada, Torma’s early explorations in colour and movement drew inspiration from the works of North American Abstract Expressionists like Jackson Pollock and Jean-Paul Riopelle. These pioneers instilled in Torma a thirst for unseen forms and patterns, igniting a passion that would shape her artistic odyssey.

Upon relocating to Berlin in 2014, Torma’s artistic practice flourished, expanding to embrace a rich tapestry of influences ranging from post-Painterly Abstraction to Conceptual Art, Op Art, and Minimalism. Her eclectic palette drew from luminaries such as Gerhard Richter, Agnes Martin, Mark Rothko, and Yayoi Kusama, reflecting a diverse spectrum of artistic sensibilities. Yet, amidst this diversity, Torma maintained a steadfast affinity for Asian Art, seamlessly integrating its aesthetic nuances into her evolving body of work.

While Torma’s early focus was on acrylic painting, her artistic evolution saw her embrace a myriad of mediums and forms of expression. From installations to digital drawing and calligraphic ink, Torma’s repertoire expanded in tandem with her exploratory spirit. Central to her creative process is an intuitive approach, where colour selection is guided by emotion and each artwork begins with a starting point, allowing for spontaneous evolution and unforeseen discoveries.

At the heart of Torma’s practice lies a profound reverence for the subconscious and the natural world. Her artworks serve as conduits for primal impulses, seeking to transcend the constraints of language and figurative representation. Through simple movements and a rejection of intellectualism, Torma endeavours to unravel the complexities of human experience, revealing the interconnectedness between inner thoughts, emotions, and external stimuli.

Imbued with imagery drawn from the artist’s everyday environment and the boundless vistas of nature, Torma’s creations pulsate with energy and vitality. They are living membranes, shaped by the ebb and flow of emotions, remodelled by the rhythmic patterns of existence. In Torma’s hands, art becomes a vessel for introspection and revelation, inviting viewers to embark on a journey of self-discovery and contemplation.

As Lali Torma continues to push the boundaries of artistic expression, her work serves as a testament to the transformative power of creativity and the enduring quest for the “unseen” within the self. With each brushstroke and gesture, she invites us to embrace the beauty of spontaneity and the boundless potential of the human spirit.
