A Celebration of Islamic Art’s Evolution, Featuring Over 60 Unique Works

The UAE Ministry of Culture, under the patronage of Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, is hosting the art exhibition “As the Sun Appears from Beyond” at the Louvre Abu Dhabi. Running until January 19, 2025, the exhibition celebrates Islamic art’s evolution, showcasing more than 60 unique works that blend tradition with modern creativity.

Exploring the Theme of Light

The exhibition draws inspiration from the theme of “light,” echoing the message from Surat Al-Ma’idah, verse 15: “There has come to you from Allah a light and a clear Book.” This concept is central to the 18th edition of the Al Burda Award and is reflected in the artwork on display.

Visitors will explore a diverse range of Islamic art, including Arabic calligraphy, ornamentation, and poetry, providing a journey through the history and contemporary reinterpretations of Islamic creativity.

A Collaborative Effort for Artistic Innovation

The exhibition is part of the first edition of the Al Burda Grant program and the “Capacity Building Program,” made possible through collaboration between the UAE Ministry of Culture and the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto. The exhibition features works that highlight the evolution of Islamic arts, from traditional to modern-day interpretations, showcasing the UAE’s role in fostering cultural and artistic innovation.

Minister’s Reflection on Art’s Role in Unity

Sheikh Salem bin Khalid Al Qasimi, Minister of Culture, expressed that the exhibition serves as a significant celebration of Islamic art’s development. He emphasized the UAE’s belief that art promotes cultural dialogue and unity across civilizations. “Art is not just an expression of beauty; it is also a means of transmitting spiritual and faith values that lead humanity towards unity and brotherhood,” he said.

“As the Sun Appears from Beyond” is a powerful showcase of the UAE’s commitment to advancing Islamic art, bridging classical traditions with modern creativity. The exhibition offers an immersive experience that invites visitors to explore the rich spiritual and cultural legacy of Islamic art, providing a meaningful connection between past and present artistic practices.
