The renowned architecture firm 3dor Concepts has completed the design of Nyori House, a minimalist home nestled in the serene village of Wayanad, Kerala. The house, named after the Malayalam term for the pleats in traditional Indian garments like sarees and mundu, is inspired by the flowing, pleated fabric commonly seen in such attire.

The design of Nyori House is deeply rooted in the client’s desire for a peaceful retreat away from the urban hustle. The structure is enveloped in soft, sweeping white walls that serve as a protective barrier, creating a secluded haven for the family. This tranquil setting is particularly advantageous for the children, offering them a safe, enclosed space for play.

A Barrier to the Outside World

The design reflects the studio’s attention to the client’s wish for simplicity and serenity. “The design was shaped by the clients’ desire for a simple, peaceful life away from the city,” explained 3dor Concepts. The undulating, wave-like lines of the facade evoke the graceful flow of pleats in traditional Indian attire, adding a sense of softness and fluidity to the exterior. The sweeping form integrates the modern architecture seamlessly with the surrounding natural landscape, enhancing the home’s peaceful atmosphere.

The arced opening at the front of the house leads from the driveway to a semi-private space where a small concrete porch offers access to the entrance. This arched passage also serves as a shield, creating a buffer for the expansive glazing that dominates the interior. The openness of the internal living and dining areas offers views of the children’s play area while maintaining privacy from the outside world.

Light and Airy Interiors

The interior design focuses on natural light, further enhancing the home’s minimalist aesthetic. Translucent curtains and thin metal louvres filter sunlight into the white-walled interiors, adding layers of warmth while maintaining the airy, light-filled ambiance. The kitchen and bedrooms are located at the rear of the house, where the design strategically places a small south-facing courtyard to bring light into the study space.

“The use of natural light through sheer white drapes and the recurring metal patterns in interiors tie the spaces together and enhance the light, airy feel,” said the design team. Metal elements, including the intricate louvres, are central to the design, creating a harmony between structure and function.

A Private Retreat for the Family

Upstairs, a central staircase leads to the first floor, where the main ensuite bedroom opens onto a private garden terrace. The terrace is screened from the street by curving metal bars, mimicking the forms of the external walls and adding an extra layer of privacy.

Founded in 2013 by Muhammed Jiyad CP, Ahmed Thaneem Abdul Majeed, and Muhammed Naseem M, 3dor Concepts is known for its thoughtful, context-driven designs. Previous projects by the firm in Kerala include homes featuring sun-shielding wooden louvres and oversized concrete roofs, as well as residences with playful, curved surfaces and custom-designed furniture.

Nyori House showcases 3dor Concepts’ dedication to blending modern design with traditional cultural elements, creating a home that is both timeless and responsive to the needs of its occupants.
