Alessandra Romani emerges as a luminary in the world of ceramics, her artistic journey characterized by a passion for exploration, a dedication to craftsmanship, and a keen eye for detail. Born in Lisbon on August 9, 1972, to a Portuguese mother and an Italian father, Romani’s upbringing in a culturally rich environment laid the foundation for her creative pursuits.

Initially trained in interior design at IADE, Romani’s path took a transformative turn when she discovered ceramics, igniting a lifelong love affair with the medium. Delving into evening classes at Ar.Co and later at Escola Artística António Arroio, she honed her skills under the tutelage of esteemed mentors, mastering techniques ranging from plaster modeling to porcelain work.

Despite considering ceramics a hobby initially, Romani’s talent quickly garnered recognition, culminating in an honorable mention at the Manuel Joaquim Afonso ceramics competition in 2005. However, it wasn’t until 2014 that she made the pivotal decision to dedicate herself exclusively to ceramics, launching the ambitious “Inspired by Arts” project.

Through “Inspired by Arts,” Romani embarked on a journey of reinterpretation, exploring her admiration for painting by translating iconic works into three-dimensional ceramic sculptures. Her meticulous attention to detail and unwavering commitment to authenticity captured the essence of masterpieces by Pablo Picasso, Amadeo Souza-Cardoso, and others.

The project caught the attention of the prestigious Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, leading to a collaboration that saw Romani’s interpretations of Souza-Cardoso’s “Natureza Viva dos Objetos – 1913” added to the museum store’s collection. Subsequently, her work gained international acclaim, with exhibitions of Saatchi Art and representation in stores and galleries worldwide.

In a testament to her versatility, Romani expanded her artistic universe through collaborations with other artists, such as illustrator Dedo Mau. Together, they co-produced illustrated ceramics, infusing Romani’s pieces with a new dimension of storytelling and expression.

Driven by a sensitive observation of nature, Romani’s recent productions exude tranquility and serenity. Incorporating elements of coastal landscapes and rocky textures, her pieces evoke a sense of harmony with the natural world.

Romani’s creative process is a testament to her meticulous craftsmanship and unwavering dedication to her craft. Drawing inspiration from still life paintings and nature alike, she employs techniques such as slab and coil building to construct her forms, imbuing each piece with a unique texture and finish.

As Alessandra Romani continues to push the boundaries of ceramic artistry, her work serves as a testament to the transformative power of creativity and the enduring beauty of handmade craftsmanship. With each piece, she invites viewers to embark on a journey of discovery, where art and nature converge in perfect harmony.
