The Toronto International Film Festival has selected the Saudi-backed, Red Sea Film Foundation-supported documentary Sudan, Remember Us, directed by Hind Meddeb, for its Docs section, as announced this week.

This Saudi-backed documentary sheds light on the resilience and courage of Sudanese activists during a critical moment in the nation’s history, vividly capturing their fight for freedom amidst political turmoil. Moreover, its selection for TIFF underscores the growing international recognition of Middle Eastern cinema and the increasing importance of telling stories from the region.

A Poignant Look at Sudan’s 2019 Uprising

The documentary offers a poignant and unflinching look at the pivotal events in Khartoum during the spring of 2019. It begins by capturing the defiant spirit of young Sudanese activists in the wake of the dictatorship’s overthrow, and then follows the subsequent military crackdown that, in turn, threatened to undo their efforts.

Amplifying Arab Cinema on the Global Stage

The selection of Sudan, Remember Us for such a prestigious festival underscores the growing recognition of Arab cinema on the global stage. The Red Sea Film Foundation’s support for the project is part of its broader mission to amplify voices from the Arab world, bringing important regional stories to international audiences.

Directed by Hind Meddeb

Hind Meddeb, a seasoned director known for her insightful and socially conscious films, brings a unique perspective to the documentary. Through her lens, the film not only captures the resilience and bravery of the Sudanese people but also delves into the complex socio-political landscape that continues to shape Sudan’s future.
