Dubai Culture has unveiled a comprehensive series of workshops dedicated to the art of Arabic calligraphy, as part of its ambitious ‘Arabic Calligraphy, Ornamentation, and Gilding’ project. This initiative aims to nurture emerging talent and instil a deeper appreciation for Arabic calligraphy and ornamentation among participants. Scheduled from May 11 to 29, the project offers 16 diverse workshops covering various calligraphy styles such as Ruq’a, Thuluth, Naskh, Ejazah, and Diwani. These workshops, designed for youth aged 13 and above, school and university students, employees, and calligraphy enthusiasts, will be conducted at the Al Jalila Cultural Centre for Children.

Under the guidance of seasoned experts in Arabic calligraphy, participants will have the opportunity to refine their skills and delve into the intricate world of ornamentation and gilding. The workshops will focus on adjusting letter formations according to each style’s rules, mastering ornamentation techniques, understanding gilding principles, and exploring colouration methods. Notable calligraphy specialists such as Abdul Razzaq Al Mahmoud, Uday Al Aaraji, Musab Doori, and Zaid Al Athamy will lead these enlightening sessions.

In addition to the workshops, a series of lectures and discussions will be hosted for school students at various Dubai Public Library branches, emphasizing the historical significance and cultural heritage of Arabic calligraphy. This initiative, which forms part of the Dubai Calligraphy Biennale, aims to serve as a cultural conduit for aspiring artists, enabling them to hone their skills, stay abreast of industry developments, and ultimately showcase their talents on a professional platform.

The ‘Arabic Calligraphy, Ornamentation, and Gilding’ project embodies Dubai Culture’s unwavering commitment to preserving and promoting the rich legacy of Arabic calligraphy, not only as an art form but also as a pivotal aspect of national identity and cultural heritage. By providing accessible educational opportunities and fostering creative expression, Dubai Culture continues to play a pivotal role in nurturing the next generation of artistic talents in the UAE.

This initiative stands as a testament to Dubai Culture’s dedication to fostering cultural enrichment and empowering individuals to explore the boundless possibilities of artistic expression. Through the fusion of tradition and innovation, participants are poised to embark on a transformative journey of self-discovery and creative exploration, laying the foundation for a vibrant future in the realm of Arabic calligraphy and visual arts.
