Restoring Post-War Architecture with a Modern Touch

German studio GMP Architekten has completed a stunning renovation of Hamburg’s Alsterschwimmhalle, preserving its cityscape-defining hyperbolic roof while transforming the site into a state-of-the-art leisure complex.

A Heritage Roof Restored

The Alsterschwimmhalle, also known locally as the “Swimming Opera,” features a distinctive double-curved roof crafted from prestressed concrete. Originally designed by Horst Niessen, Rolf Störmer, and Walter Neuhäusser between 1968 and 1974, the roof is a listed structure protected by Germany’s Office for the Preservation of Historic Monuments.

  • The roof spans 96 metres and covers 4,500 square metres, making it one of the largest of its kind.
  • GMP Architekten ensured its original appearance was preserved, adding a new membrane and insulation to withstand chlorine damage, humidity, and high temperatures.

Modern Enhancements

While maintaining its historic integrity, the renovation introduced contemporary features:

  • Expanded Facilities: A new 25-metre pool, training areas, saunas, and a fitness club complement the original 50-metre pool and diving board.
  • Accessibility: Public spaces were remodelled to improve accessibility for all visitors.
  • Energy Efficiency: Upgraded building services enhance environmental performance.

Challenges in Structural Safety

Preserving the roof during construction posed significant challenges:

  • The tie beam linking two roof supports beneath the main pool could not be disturbed, requiring constant monitoring during demolition and rebuilding efforts.
  • The renovation carefully balanced heritage conservation with modern engineering solutions.

Urban Integration

The project also reconnected the swimming pool with its urban surroundings:

  • A pedestrianised entrance route and forecourt open the site to the city.
  • Pathways use salvaged materials from the original design, blending sustainability with aesthetic continuity.

“The necessary extensions were carefully integrated into the overall ensemble with respect for the existing listed building,” said Jörn Ortmann, GMP Architekten’s detailed design lead.

The Alsterschwimmhalle now stands as a beacon of Hamburg’s post-war architectural heritage, combining the grandeur of its historic design with cutting-edge leisure amenities. GMP Architekten’s thoughtful restoration and modernization ensure this iconic structure continues to serve the community while celebrating its rich history.
