Renowned Japanese virtual reality artist Aimi Sekiguchi recently brought her creative talents to Dubai’s Rashid Center for People of Determination, captivating students through a live digital painting performance in the metaverse. On October 15, Sekiguchi offered an interactive experience that blended art and technology, creating a memorable moment for children at the center.

The event was a milestone as the first performance by a Japanese artist at the Rashid Center and was attended by IMANISHI Jun, the Consul General of Japan in Dubai. Sekiguchi’s immersive VR art gave the children a chance to explore a different world. “Many of the children in wheelchairs have limited access to places in daily life, so they enjoyed experiencing another world through virtual reality,” Sekiguchi said to Arab News Japan. “Seeing their wonderful smiles made me very happy.”

Art Beyond Borders

The Consul General emphasized the significance of such initiatives. “I have been interested in the UAE’s People of Determination initiatives and have been thinking about whether it is possible to provide opportunities for people of determination to experience art and music across borders and nationalities,” he said. The enthusiasm displayed by the children reflected the profound impact of Sekiguchi’s performance, with some even joining her on stage, discovering a new form of artistic expression.

IMANISHI Jun expressed his hopes for the broader implications of the performance. “I’m so delighted to be able to see thousands of children’s smiles through this stimulating art and music performance. I hope that this will be an opportunity to open up the new world of these children who do not have the opportunity to go out and see a live digital concert,” he added.

Empowering Young Minds

Sekiguchi’s art offered more than visual stimulation; it introduced a new avenue for creativity and connection. Children and spectators engaged with a medium that showcased the possibilities of digital art, broadening their horizons and inspiring joy. “The Rashid Center has many bright children where various people from different backgrounds come together,” Sekiguchi stated. “I hope challenges and successes in welfare will be mutually shared among countries, leading to a better future for all.”

This landmark event highlighted the importance of art in connecting and empowering communities, especially for individuals with limited access to such experiences. By blending advanced technology with artistic creativity, Sekiguchi demonstrated the potential of VR to transform lives, creating a moment of unity, creativity, and joy that transcended cultural boundaries.
